How to Make Simple Questions in Japanese

Japanese questions become much easier when you keep the sentence pattern intact. In polite speech, a noun sentence ends in ですか, a verb sentence in ますか, and an adjective keeps its correct form before ですか. For an information question, put a question word such as どこ or 何 in the position occupied by the missing information. You do not need English-style word-order changes or a separate verb such as do.

Yes-no questions: add か to a complete polite sentence

StatementQuestionMeaning
学生です。学生ですか。Are you a student?
毎日働きます。毎日働きますか。Do you work every day?
この本は面白いです。この本は面白いですか。Is this book interesting?
部屋は静かです。部屋は静かですか。Is the room quiet?

Japanese does not invert a subject and verb. It also does not add do, does, or did. Keep 学生です or 働きます in the same order and add か. In careful writing, the Japanese full stop 「。」is common after か; a question mark is possible in informal modern writing but is not grammatically required.

Choose the ending from the sentence type

先生ですか。/Are you a teacher?

日本語を勉強しますか。/Do you study Japanese?

昨日、忙しかったですか。/Were you busy yesterday?

駅は近くなかったですか。/Wasn’t the station nearby?

Do not attach ですか after a ます verb: 勉強しますですか is incorrect. An い-adjective must show past or negative meaning itself, so “Was it expensive?” is 高かったですか, not 高いでしたか. A な-adjective and noun use noun-like endings: 静かでしたか and 休みでしたか.

Answer with the information the question asks for

学生ですか。― はい、学生です。/いいえ、学生じゃありません。

毎日料理しますか。― はい、します。/いいえ、しません。

昨日は暑かったですか。― はい、暑かったです。/いいえ、暑くなかったです。

A short はい or いいえ is often enough when the context is clear. For language practice, repeat the relevant predicate rather than changing everything to そうです. Notice that the answer matches the form in the question: しますか pairs with します or しません.

Put a question word where the answer would go

Question wordAsks aboutExample
だれ/どなたpersonあの人はだれですか。
何(なに/なん)thing or content何を食べますか。
どこplaceどこで勉強しますか。
いつtimeいつ日本へ行きますか。
どれ/どの+nounchoiceどの電車に乗りますか。
いくらpriceこの本はいくらですか。
どう/どんなmanner or kind日本の生活はどうですか。
なぜ/どうしてreasonどうして日本語を勉強しますか。

Compare 東京で勉強します and どこで勉強しますか. The answer phrase 東京で is replaced by どこで; the rest of the sentence stays stable. This replacement method prevents English word order from taking over.

The particle belongs to the question word

The question word does not replace the relationship marker. Choose the particle from the verb and the role of the missing information.

どこに行きますか。― 京都に行きます。
Where are you going? — I am going to Kyoto.

どこで昼ご飯を食べますか。― 食堂で食べます。
Where will you eat lunch? — In the cafeteria.

だれと話しましたか。― 先生と話しました。
Who did you speak with? — I spoke with the teacher.

だれにメールを送りますか。― 田中さんに送ります。
Who will you send the email to? — To Tanaka.

何で会社へ行きますか。― 電車で行きます。
How do you go to work? — By train.

どこ alone means “where,” but どこに asks for a destination or location of existence, and どこで asks for an action location. Likewise, だれと and だれに request different relationships.

When the unknown person or thing is the subject, use が

だれが来ますか。― 山田さんが来ます。
Who is coming? — Yamada is coming.

何が好きですか。― 音楽が好きです。
What do you like? — I like music.

どの料理がおいしいですか。― このカレーがおいしいです。
Which dish is good? — This curry is good.

An unknown subject cannot normally be the established topic, so question-word subjects take が rather than は. The answer often keeps が because it supplies the newly identified subject. Compare 田中さんはどこにいますか “Where is Tanaka?” with だれが教室にいますか “Who is in the classroom?”

何 is read なに or なん

The kanji 何 has two common readings. Use なに before many particles: 何を(なにを), 何が(なにが), 何に(なにに). Use なん before です and many counters: 何ですか(なんですか), 何時(なんじ), 何人(なんにん), 何本(なんぼん). 何で can be なにで “by what means?” or なんで “why?” in conversation, so context and intonation matter.

これは何ですか。/What is this?

何を買いましたか。/What did you buy?

何時に起きますか。/What time do you get up?

どれ and どの are not interchangeable

あなたのかばんはどれですか。/Which one is your bag?

どのかばんがあなたのですか。/Which bag is yours?

どんなかばんが欲しいですか。/What kind of bag do you want?

どれ stands alone. どの must directly modify a noun. どんな asks about type or character, not which member of a known set.

Ask naturally about time and frequency

何時に寝ますか。― 十一時に寝ます。

いつ日本へ来ましたか。― 去年の四月に来ました。

一週間に何回運動しますか。― 三回運動します。

どのくらい日本語を勉強しましたか。― 二年間勉強しました。

いつ is broad; 何時 asks for a clock time; 何曜日 asks for a day; 何日 may ask for a calendar date or number of days depending on context. どのくらい asks duration, amount, or degree.

Polite and casual question endings

PoliteCasualMeaning
行きますか。行く?Will you go?
学生ですか。学生?Are you a student?
忙しいですか。忙しい?Are you busy?
どこへ行きますか。どこへ行く?Where are you going?

Casual Japanese often uses rising intonation without か. Do not simply remove ます and leave an incomplete stem: 行き? is not the casual form of 行きますか; use the plain form 行く?. Begin with polite forms until plain forms are familiar.

A short conversation model

A:週末、何をしますか。
B:友達と映画を見ます。
A:どこで見ますか。
B:新宿の映画館で見ます。
A:何時に始まりますか。
B:三時に始まります。いっしょに行きますか。
A:はい、行きたいです。

A: What will you do this weekend? B: I will see a film with a friend. A: Where? B: At a cinema in Shinjuku. A: What time does it start? B: At three. Would you like to come? A: Yes, I would.

Each follow-up question replaces one missing phrase while keeping the appropriate particle. This is a useful speaking drill: answer once, then ask one related question.

Common mistakes

  1. Adding English-style do: a Japanese question only needs the Japanese predicate and か.
  2. Saying 食べますですか instead of 食べますか.
  3. Dropping the particle: どこ行きますか may occur casually, but beginners should first learn どこに/へ行きますか.
  4. Using どこに for an action location: study at a library is 図書館で勉強します.
  5. Using は after a question-word subject: だれは来ますか instead of だれが来ますか.
  6. Using どの by itself: choose どれですか or どの本ですか.
  7. Answering a negative question from English habit without listening to the Japanese predicate.

Practice

  1. Turn 学生です into a polite question and give a negative answer.
  2. Ask “Where do you study Japanese?” using どこ.
  3. Ask “Who is coming tomorrow?”
  4. Choose: どれ本/どの本を読みますか.
  5. Ask “What time do you get up?”
  6. Ask how someone goes to work, then answer “by bus.”
  7. Correct: 昨日、忙しいでしたか.
  8. Make casual: 毎日コーヒーを飲みますか.

Answers: 1 学生ですか。― いいえ、学生じゃありません. 2 どこで日本語を勉強しますか. 3 明日、だれが来ますか. 4 どの本を読みますか. 5 何時に起きますか. 6 何で会社へ行きますか。― バスで行きます. 7 昨日、忙しかったですか. 8 毎日コーヒーを飲む?
