The Japanese ない-form is the plain non-past negative of a verb, but its job goes far beyond saying “do not.” It connects to patterns for requests, permission, obligation, advice, intention, conditions, and doing one action without another. Learn how each verb group forms ない, then treat the resulting form as the entrance to a family of useful expressions.
First identify the verb group
Ichidan verbs generally drop る and add ない. Godan verbs change their final kana from the う-row to the matching あ-row and add ない. する and 来る are irregular.
| Group | Dictionary form | ない-form |
|---|---|---|
| Ichidan | 食べる | 食べない |
| Ichidan | 見る | 見ない |
| Godan | 書く | 書かない |
| Godan | 読む | 読まない |
| Irregular | する | しない |
| Irregular | 来る(くる) | 来ない(こない) |
A verb ending in る is not automatically Ichidan. 帰る, 入る, 走る, 知る, and 要る are common Godan verbs: 帰らない, 入らない, 走らない, 知らない, 要らない.
Godan sound changes
| Ending | Change | Example |
|---|---|---|
| く→か | 書く→書かない | I do not write |
| ぐ→が | 泳ぐ→泳がない | I do not swim |
| す→さ | 話す→話さない | I do not speak |
| つ→た | 待つ→待たない | I do not wait |
| ぬ→な | 死ぬ→死なない | does not die |
| ぶ→ば | 遊ぶ→遊ばない | I do not play |
| む→ま | 飲む→飲まない | I do not drink |
| る→ら | 帰る→帰らない | I do not return |
| う→わ | 買う→買わない | I do not buy |
The special point is う→わ, not あ. 買う becomes 買わない, and 会う becomes 会わない. This preserves the historical sound pattern.
Important irregular and easily confused forms
する→しない 来る→来ない(こない) ある→ない
勉強する→勉強しない 持ってくる→持ってこない
ある has the negative ない, not あらない. The polite negative is ありません. Also distinguish verbs from adjectives and nouns: 高くない is the negative of the い-adjective 高い; 学生じゃない is the negative of a noun sentence. These contain ない but are not created by verb-group rules.
Use 1: plain negative statements and questions
朝ご飯は食べない。/I do not eat breakfast.
今日は学校に行かない。/I am not going to school today.
コーヒーを飲まない?/Won’t you have coffee?
Plain negative speech is appropriate with close relationships and in embedded clauses. For a polite main sentence, use 食べません. Do not attach です mechanically to every verb negative. 食べないです occurs conversationally, but 食べません is the stable polite form for beginners.
The ない-form changes like an い-adjective
| Function | 食べる | 読む |
|---|---|---|
| Non-past negative | 食べない | 読まない |
| Past negative | 食べなかった | 読まなかった |
| て-link | 食べなくて | 読まなくて |
| Conditional base | 食べなければ | 読まなければ |
To make the past negative, replace final い with かった. 昨日食べない is normally inconsistent when describing a finished yesterday; use 昨日食べなかった.
Use 2: ask someone not to do something
The pattern is ない-form+でください.
ここで写真を撮らないでください。/Please do not take photos here.
このドアを開けないでください。/Please do not open this door.
心配しないでください。/Please do not worry.
Do not use 撮りませんでください. Build the plain negative 撮らない, then add でください. The shorter plain command 撮らないで is common with close relationships but can sound direct.
Use 3: say an action is unnecessary
The pattern なくてもいい means “it is all right even if you do not” or “you do not have to.”
明日は来なくてもいいです。/You do not have to come tomorrow.
名前は漢字で書かなくてもいいです。/You do not have to write your name in kanji.
全部食べなくてもいいですよ。/You do not have to eat everything.
Replace final ない with なくて, then add もいい. This expresses lack of necessity, not prohibition. “You must not come” would be 来てはいけません.
Use 4: express obligation
Two common full patterns are ない-form without final い+ければならない and なくてはいけない.
明日、早く起きなければなりません。/I must get up early tomorrow.
宿題をしなくてはいけません。/I have to do my homework.
薬を飲まなければなりません。/I must take medicine.
The literal logic is “if I do not, it will not do,” which produces obligation. Conversation often shortens these to なきゃ or なくちゃ, but learn the complete forms first so you can recognise the grammar and choose an appropriate level.
Use 5: give negative advice with ないほうがいい
夜、コーヒーを飲まないほうがいいです。/It would be better not to drink coffee at night.
その道は一人で歩かないほうがいいです。/It is better not to walk that road alone.
This is advice, not a formal rule. Positive advice commonly uses the plain past+ほうがいい: 早く寝たほうがいいです. The negative side uses ない+ほうがいい.
Use 6: do one action without doing another
ないで can mean “without doing” when it connects two actions by the same person.
朝ご飯を食べないで、学校へ行きました。/I went to school without eating breakfast.
辞書を見ないで、答えてください。/Please answer without looking at a dictionary.
傘を持たないで出かけました。/I went out without taking an umbrella.
In these examples, the first action is deliberately not performed and the second is performed instead.
ないで and なくて are not always interchangeable
| Pattern | Typical role | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ないで | Without doing A, do B | 朝ご飯を食べないで出かけた |
| なくて | Cause, reason, or linked negative state | お金がなくて、買えなかった |
| なくて | Part of a fixed pattern | 行かなくてもいい |
電車が来なくて、困りました。/The train did not come, which caused a problem.
日本語が分からなくて、説明できませんでした。/I did not understand Japanese, so I could not explain.
When the first negative situation causes the second, なくて is common. When someone chooses to omit one action and performs another, ないで is the useful beginner pattern.
Use 7: intentions and plans
今日は出かけないつもりです。/I intend not to go out today.
今年は車を買わない予定です。/I do not plan to buy a car this year.
甘い物を食べないことにしました。/I decided not to eat sweets.
The ない-form can modify nouns such as つもり and 予定, or connect to ことにする. This is another reason the form is needed inside polite sentences.
Use 8: before, until, and conditions
宿題が終わらないと、遊べません。/If I do not finish my homework, I cannot play.
雨が降らなければ、散歩します。/If it does not rain, I will take a walk.
田中さんが来ないうちに、準備しましょう。/Let us prepare before Tanaka comes.
These patterns attach to a plain negative clause. Learn the complete meaning of each construction rather than translating ない alone.
One verb across the ない family
| Base verb | Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 読む | 読まない | do not read |
| 読む | 読まないでください | please do not read |
| 読む | 読まなくてもいい | do not have to read |
| 読む | 読まなければならない | must read |
| 読む | 読まないほうがいい | had better not read |
| 読む | 読まないで答える | answer without reading |
Say the family aloud as connected chunks. Accurate formation of 読まない unlocks every row.
Common mistakes
- Treating every る-verb as Ichidan: 帰る→帰ない instead of 帰らない.
- Changing う to あ: 買あない instead of 買わない.
- Using あらない as the negative of ある.
- Saying 食べませんでください instead of 食べないでください.
- Confusing なくてもいい “do not have to” with てはいけない “must not.”
- Using a non-past negative for a finished past event.
- Assuming every word ending in ない is a verb ない-form.
- Using ないで and なくて interchangeably without considering the relationship between clauses.
Practice
- Make the ない-forms of 食べる, 書く, 読む, 買う, 帰る, する, and 来る.
- Make the past negative of 飲む.
- Say “Please do not open the window.”
- Say “You do not have to come tomorrow.”
- Say “I must study.” using なければなりません.
- Say “It is better not to eat too much.”
- Say “I went out without eating breakfast.”
- Choose ないで or なくて: お金が( )、買えませんでした.
Answers: 1 食べない、書かない、読まない、買わない、帰らない、しない、来ない. 2 飲まなかった. 3 窓を開けないでください. 4 明日は来なくてもいいです. 5 勉強しなければなりません. 6 食べすぎないほうがいいです. 7 朝ご飯を食べないで、出かけました. 8 お金がなくて、買えませんでした.
