Days of the Week in Japanese: Readings, Questions, and に

Every Japanese weekday ends in 曜日(ようび). The first character changes: 月 for Monday, 火 for Tuesday, 水 for Wednesday, 木 for Thursday, 金 for Friday, 土 for Saturday, and 日 for Sunday. Memorizing the list is useful, but a learner also needs to ask “What day?”, place a weekday in a sentence, and decide whether to use に, は, or no particle.

Quick answer: Monday through Sunday are 月曜日, 火曜日, 水曜日, 木曜日, 金曜日, 土曜日, and 日曜日. Ask 何曜日(なんようび). Use に when a weekday marks when an event or action occurs, use は when the weekday is the topic or contrast, and omit a particle in casual schedule statements when the relationship is already clear.

Monday through Sunday

EnglishJapaneseKanaRomajiMemory image
Monday月曜日げつようびgetsuyōbi月: moon
Tuesday火曜日かようびkayōbi火: fire
Wednesday水曜日すいようびsuiyōbi水: water
Thursday木曜日もくようびmokuyōbi木: tree or wood
Friday金曜日きんようびkin’yōbi金: gold or metal
Saturday土曜日どようびdoyōbi土: earth or soil
Sunday日曜日にちようびnichiyōbi日: sun or day

The first kanji gives a useful image, but its weekday reading is not always the same as its most familiar standalone word. 月 is つき when it means “moon,” yet Monday begins げつ. 火 can be ひ when it means “fire,” yet Tuesday begins か. Learn the whole word, not a word-for-word English translation of each kanji.

今日は水曜日です。
かな: きょう は すいようび です。
Kyō wa suiyōbi desu.
Today is Wednesday.

休みは土曜日と日曜日です。
かな: やすみ は どようび と にちようび です。
Yasumi wa doyōbi to nichiyōbi desu.
My days off are Saturday and Sunday.

Ask 何曜日 for the day of the week

何曜日(なんようび) means “what day of the week.” The most direct calendar question is 今日は何曜日ですか. When you ask about an event, make the event the topic: 会議は何曜日ですか. If the question contains an action, 何曜日 often takes に: 何曜日に日本語を勉強しますか.

今日は何曜日ですか。― 木曜日です。
かな: きょう は なんようび です か。― もくようび です。
Kyō wa nan’yōbi desu ka. — Mokuyōbi desu.
What day is it today? — It is Thursday.

日本語のクラスは何曜日ですか。― 火曜日です。
かな: にほんご の クラス は なんようび です か。― かようび です。
Nihongo no kurasu wa nan’yōbi desu ka. — Kayōbi desu.
What day is Japanese class? — It is Tuesday.

何曜日に働きますか。― 月曜日から金曜日まで働きます。
かな: なんようび に はたらきます か。― げつようび から きんようび まで はたらきます。
Nan’yōbi ni hatarakimasu ka. — Getsuyōbi kara kin’yōbi made hatarakimasu.
Which days do you work? — I work from Monday through Friday.

In careful romanization, the boundary in なんようび may be shown as nan’yōbi so the reader does not mistake ん+よ for a different sound. Say なん・ようび smoothly, without adding a full extra vowel.

Use に when the weekday marks when something happens

With an action or event verb, に can mark a specific weekday as its time. 月曜日に行きます means “I will go on Monday.” 会議は金曜日にあります means “The meeting is on Friday.” The particle connects the day to the event as the time when it occurs.

金曜日に友達と映画を見ます。
かな: きんようび に ともだち と えいが を みます。
Kin’yōbi ni tomodachi to eiga o mimasu.
I will see a movie with a friend on Friday.

試験は月曜日にあります。
かな: しけん は げつようび に あります。
Shiken wa getsuyōbi ni arimasu.
The exam is on Monday.

When the weekday itself is the answer after です, do not insert に: 試験は月曜日です. Compare this with 試験は月曜日にあります. The first sentence identifies the exam day; the second locates the event in time with あります. Both are natural, but their structures differ.

Sentence patternNatural exampleWhat the particle does
Event は weekday です会議は火曜日です。The weekday is the predicate; no に.
Event は weekday に あります会議は火曜日にあります。に marks when the event occurs.
Weekday に action火曜日に勉強します。に marks the action time.
Weekday は comment火曜日は忙しいです。は makes Tuesday the topic or contrast.

Use は for a topic or contrast

は does more than mark time. It tells the listener what you are commenting on and often creates contrast. 月曜日は働きます can imply “As for Monday, I work” and may contrast Monday with another day. 月曜日に働きます simply locates the work on Monday. If someone asks whether you work Monday and Tuesday, answering 月曜日は働きます may leave Tuesday open or imply a difference.

月曜日は働きますが、火曜日は休みます。
かな: げつようび は はたらきます が、かようび は やすみます。
Getsuyōbi wa hatarakimasu ga, kayōbi wa yasumimasu.
I work on Monday, but I take Tuesday off.

土曜日は時間があります。
かな: どようび は じかん が あります。
Doyōbi wa jikan ga arimasu.
As for Saturday, I have time.

A sentence can also contain both a topic and a time marker: 私は木曜日に日本語を勉強します. Here 私は establishes “I” as the topic, while 木曜日に marks when the studying occurs. Do not assume a sentence can contain only one particle.

When can the weekday appear without に?

In conversation, speakers often omit に after a weekday when the schedule relationship is obvious: 金曜日、行きます. This sounds like a brief schedule statement, with a pause after the day. Omission is especially common in notes, calendars, headlines, and casual answers. For a beginner producing a full neutral sentence, weekday+に+action is a reliable model.

Do not transfer this rule to every time expression. Relative words such as 今日, 明日, 昨日, 今週, 来週, 毎日, and 毎週 normally appear without に. A weekday is different because に is available when it functions as a specific event time.

明日、病院へ行きます。
かな: あした、びょういん へ いきます。
Ashita, byōin e ikimasu.
I am going to the hospital tomorrow.

来週の水曜日に病院へ行きます。
かな: らいしゅう の すいようび に びょういん へ いきます。
Raishū no suiyōbi ni byōin e ikimasu.
I am going to the hospital next Wednesday.

In the second example, の connects 来週 to 水曜日, and に marks the complete phrase 来週の水曜日 as the event time. Saying 来週に is usually not the basic choice.

Build a useful weekly schedule

A weekday becomes easier to remember when attached to a recurring activity. Use a stable sequence: weekday, optional clock time, object or destination, verb. If both weekday and clock time are present, a natural beginner sentence can mark both with に: 月曜日に七時に勉強します. In everyday speech, speakers often avoid repeating に by saying 月曜日の七時に or 月曜日、七時に. The form 月曜日の七時に is particularly clear: “at seven on Monday.”

毎週水曜日の午後六時に日本語を勉強します。
かな: まいしゅう すいようび の ごご ろくじ に にほんご を べんきょう します。
Maishū suiyōbi no gogo rokuji ni Nihongo o benkyō shimasu.
I study Japanese every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

木曜日にジムへ行って、日曜日に買い物をします。
かな: もくようび に ジム へ いって、にちようび に かいもの を します。
Mokuyōbi ni jimu e itte, nichiyōbi ni kaimono o shimasu.
I go to the gym on Thursday and shop on Sunday.

Answers and reasons

  1. 月曜日(げつようび/getsuyōbi). 月 uses げつ in the weekday name.
  2. 水曜日(すいようび/suiyōbi). 水 uses すい in this compound.
  3. 日曜日(にちようび/nichiyōbi). The first 日 is read にち here.
  4. なんようび/nan’yōbi. 何 is read なん before 曜日.
  5. 今日は金曜日です。
    かな: きょう は きんようび です。
    Kyō wa kin’yōbi desu.
The weekday is the predicate, so it ends in です.
  6. 会議は何曜日ですか。
かな: かいぎ は なんようび です か。
    Kaigi wa nan’yōbi desu ka.
会議 is the topic, and 何曜日 asks for its day.
  7. に: 土曜日に友達に会います。 The first に marks Saturday as the meeting time; the second marks the person met.
  8. No particle: 明日友達に会います。 明日 normally does not take に.
  9. No particle: 試験は火曜日です。 Tuesday is the predicate before です.
  10. に: 試験は火曜日にあります。 に marks when the event exists or occurs.
  11. は, は: 月曜日は働きますが、火曜日は休みます。 Repeated は explicitly contrasts the two days.
  12. 来週の木曜日に病院へ行きます。
    かな: らいしゅう の もくようび に びょういん へ いきます。
Raishū no mokuyōbi ni byōin e ikimasu.
の connects “next week” to Thursday; に marks the complete day phrase as the action time.
  13. 毎週水曜日の午後七時半に日本語を勉強します。
かな: まいしゅう すいようび の ごご しちじはん に にほんご を べんきょう します。
Maishū suiyōbi no gogo shichiji-han ni Nihongo o benkyō shimasu.
の links Wednesday to 7:30 p.m., and に marks the exact study time.
  14. 月曜日に行きます neutrally states that Monday is when the person will go. 月曜日は行きます makes Monday the topic and often contrasts it with another day, as in “I will go on Monday, at least.”

Summary

Learn each weekday as a complete word ending in 曜日, then use 何曜日 to ask which day. In a neutral action sentence, weekday+に is a reliable pattern. When the weekday is the predicate before です, do not add に. Use は when you want to make the day a topic or contrast it with another day, and recognize that casual schedules may omit に. Relative words such as 今日, 明日, and 来週 follow a different pattern and normally appear without に.
