Knowing that 1 is いち and 2 is に is only the beginning. In real Japanese, a number usually appears with a counter or unit, and that combination may change its sound. Four can be よん, よ, or し; seven can be なな or しち; nine can be きゅう or く. One book is not いちさつ but いっさつ, and one long object is いっぽん. The useful skill is therefore not “recite one through ten,” but “choose and pronounce the whole quantity.”
Start with the basic number readings
| Number | Common reading | Other reading to recognize | Beginner note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | ゼロ (zero) | れい (rei) | ゼロ is common in phone numbers; れい occurs in formal or mathematical contexts. |
| 1 | いち (ichi) | — | The final ち often becomes a small っ before certain counters. |
| 2 | に (ni) | — | Usually stable. |
| 3 | さん (san) | — | Some counters become voiced after さん: さんぼん, さんびき. |
| 4 | よん (yon) | し (shi) | Use よん as a safe default, but fixed combinations include よじ and しがつ. |
| 5 | ご (go) | — | Usually stable. |
| 6 | ろく (roku) | — | The final く often becomes small っ: ろっぽん, ろっぴき. |
| 7 | なな (nana) | しち (shichi) | なな is easy to hear clearly, but time normally uses しちじ. |
| 8 | はち (hachi) | — | The final ち often becomes small っ: はっぽん, はっさい. |
| 9 | きゅう (kyū) | く (ku) | きゅう is the safe default, but 9:00 is くじ and September is くがつ. |
| 10 | じゅう (jū) | — | Before some counters, じゅっ or じっ is used. |
The alternative readings of four, seven, and nine are not interchangeable everywhere. Instead of asking which reading is universally “correct,” ask what is being counted. This keeps the choice tied to a real expression.
Four, seven, and nine change by context
| Context | 4 | 7 | 9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counting or a phone number | よん | なな | きゅう |
| Clock hour | よじ | しちじ | くじ |
| People | よにん | しちにん (ななにん is also heard) | きゅうにん |
| Age | よんさい | ななさい | きゅうさい |
| Month | しがつ | しちがつ | くがつ |
| Years as a duration | よねん | ななねん/しちねん | きゅうねん |
家族は四人です。
かな: かぞく は よにん です。
Kazoku wa yonin desu.
There are four people in my family.
会議は七時からです。
かな: かいぎ は しちじ から です。
Kaigi wa shichiji kara desu.
The meeting starts at seven.
妹は九歳です。
かな: いもうと は きゅうさい です。
Imōto wa kyūsai desu.
My younger sister is nine years old.
A common beginner error is to make a combination mechanically, such as よんじ, ななじ, or きゅうじ. Those forms do not give the standard clock readings. Treat よじ, しちじ, and くじ as three complete vocabulary items.
Counters trigger sound changes
A Japanese counter classifies what you count. 冊 counts bound volumes, 本 counts long cylindrical objects, 匹 counts small animals, and 個 counts many small separate objects. The meaning of the counter matters, but so does its first sound. With counters beginning in h, the first consonant may become b or p; the number may also end in a short pause written with small っ.
| Quantity | 冊: books | 本: long objects | 匹: small animals | 個: small items |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Mizu o roppon kaimashita.
I bought six bottles of water.
猫が三匹います。
かな: ねこ が さんびき います。
Neko ga sanbiki imasu.
There are three cats.
本を八冊借りました。
かな: ほん を はっさつ かりました。
Hon o hassatsu karimashita.
I borrowed eight books.
Do not pronounce the spelling one character at a time. いち+ほん does not remain ichi-hon; it becomes いっぽん, with a short closure before p. Likewise, さん+ほん becomes さんぼん. The kana accurately shows the resulting sound.
People and ages contain their own exceptions
For people, one and two use native Japanese forms: 一人 is ひとり and 二人 is ふたり. From three onward, 人 is normally にん. Four people is よにん, not よんにん. 七人 is commonly しちにん; ななにん is also used when a speaker wants the number to be especially clear. The question word is 何人, read なんにん.
For age, use 数字+歳. The main sound changes are 一歳 いっさい, 八歳 はっさい, and 十歳 じゅっさい or じっさい. Twenty years old is the special word 二十歳, はたち. Ages four, seven, and nine use よんさい, ななさい, and きゅうさい.
子どもが二人います。
かな: こども が ふたり います。
Kodomo ga futari imasu.
I have two children.
弟は二十歳です。
かな: おとうと は はたち です。
Otōto wa hatachi desu.
My younger brother is twenty years old.
Prices use the large-number readings
Japanese groups large numbers by ten thousand, not by one thousand. The key units for shopping are 百 ひゃく, 千 せん, and 万 まん. Three hundred, six hundred, and eight hundred change sound: さんびゃく, ろっぴゃく, はっぴゃく. Three thousand and eight thousand are さんぜん and はっせん. Four hundred, seven hundred, and nine hundred use よんひゃく, ななひゃく, and きゅうひゃく.
| Amount | Reading | Amount | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4円 | よえん yo-en | 400円 | よんひゃくえん yonhyaku-en |
| 300円 | さんびゃくえん | 600円 | ろっぴゃくえん |
| 800円 | はっぴゃくえん | 3,000円 | さんぜんえん |
| 8,000円 | はっせんえん | 10,000円 | いちまんえん |
このかばんは四千七百円です。
かな: この かばん は よんせん ななひゃくえん です。
Kono kaban wa yonsen nanahyaku-en desu.
This bag is 4,700 yen.
全部で八千三百円です。
かな: ぜんぶ で はっせん さんびゃくえん です。
Zenbu de hassen sanbyaku-en desu.
The total is 8,300 yen.
Notice the contrast between exactly 4円, よえん, and 400円, よんひゃくえん. In a larger number, read each unit as part of the complete amount. Do not insert “and” as English does in some styles: 4,700 is simply よんせん ななひゃく.
Common errors and how to repair them
| Incorrect or risky form | Better form | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 四時 = よんじ | よじ | The clock-hour combination is fixed. |
| 一人 = いちにん | ひとり | One and two people have special native readings. |
| 一冊 = いちさつ | いっさつ | Small っ marks the sound change before 冊. |
| 三本 = さんほん | さんぼん | 本 becomes ぼん after さん. |
| 八歳 = はちさい | はっさい | 八 contracts before 歳. |
| 八百円 = はちひゃくえん | はっぴゃくえん | Both the number and the first sound of 百 change. |

- Correct this reading: 800円 = はちひゃくえん.
- Complete “I bought six bottles of water”: 水を( )買いました。
- Complete “There are four people in my family”: 家族は( )です。
Answers and reasons
- よん. This is the dependable default when 4 stands alone.
- よじ. Clock hours use the fixed reading よじ, not よんじ or しじ.
- しちにん. This is the common standard reading; ななにん is also used for clarity.
- きゅうさい. Ages use きゅう for 9.
- ひとり. One person has a special native Japanese reading.
- はたち. Twenty years old is irregular; it is not にじゅっさい in the ordinary age expression.
- 一冊(いっさつ/issatsu). 冊 counts a bound book, and 一 triggers small っ.
- さんぼん/sanbon. 本 changes from ほん to ぼん after さん.
- ろっぴき/roppiki. 六 contracts to ろっ and 匹 becomes ぴき.
- はっこ/hakko. 八 contracts before 個.
- よんせん ななひゃくえん/yonsen nanahyaku-en. Read 4,000 and 700 by their place values, then add 円.
- はっぴゃくえん/happyaku-en. 800 has a contracted and semi-voiced form.
- 水を六本買いました。
かな: みず を ろっぽん かいました。
Mizu o roppon kaimashita.
“Bottles” are long objects, so 本 is read ろっぽん after six. - 家族は四人です。
かな: かぞく は よにん です。
Kazoku wa yonin desu.
Four people is よにん, with no extra ん after よ.
Summary
Japanese numbers become usable when you learn the number, unit, and sound change together. Keep よん, なな, and きゅう as default readings, but memorize fixed combinations such as よじ, しちじ, くじ, よにん, and よえん. For counters, pay attention to small っ and the shifts from h to b or p. Practice whole quantities such as さんぼん, ろっぴき, はっさつ, はっぴゃくえん, and はたち instead of assembling them at the last second.
