Japanese も: Saying Also, Too, and Neither

The Japanese particle も often means “also” or “too,” but its position depends on the grammatical job of the item being added. In basic sentences, も usually replaces は, が, or を. It follows に or で, creating にも or でも, because those particles still need to show destination, time, or place of action.

Quick answer: Put も directly after the person, thing, time, or place that shares the same information. In beginner-level neutral sentences, use も instead of は, が, or を, but keep に and で before it: にも and でも. With a question word and a negative predicate, patterns such as 何なにも食たべません and 誰だれも来きません mean “eat nothing” and “no one comes.”

も Marks the Item Being Added

Start with one statement. Then put も after the new item that shares that statement. English often places “too” near the end of a sentence, but Japanese places も immediately after the added item.

私わたしは学生がくせいです。
I am a student.

妹いもうとも学生がくせいです。
My younger sister is a student too.

今日きょうも日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうします。
I am studying Japanese today too.

The item before も is the one being added. 妹いもうとも adds the younger sister; 今日きょうも adds today.

も Replaces は, が, and を

In ordinary beginner sentences, do not stack も after は, が, or を. Replace the original particle with も.

Original jobBefore adding もWith もMeaning
Topic は妹いもうとは学生がくせいです。妹いもうとも学生がくせいです。My younger sister is a student too.
Subject が犬いぬがいます。犬いぬもいます。There is a dog too.
Object を雑誌ざっしを読よみます。雑誌ざっしも読よみます。I read magazines too.

For example, after saying 本ほんを読よみます, add another object with 雑誌ざっしも読よみます. The object marker を disappears because も takes its place. For a fuller comparison of topics and subjects, see The Japanese Particle は.

Keep に and で: にも and でも

Particles に and で normally stay before も because they carry information that も does not replace. に can mark a destination or time. で can mark the place where an action happens.

Particle jobFirst statementAdded statementMeaning
Destination に学校がっこうに行いきます。図書館としょかんにも行いきます。I also go to the library.
Time に土曜日どようびに働はたらきます。日曜日にちようびにも働はたらきます。I work on Sunday too.
Action location で家いえで勉強べんきょうします。図書館としょかんでも勉強べんきょうします。I also study at the library.

Compare 図書館としょかんにも行いきます with 図書館としょかんでも勉強べんきょうします. The first sentence needs に for a destination; the second needs で for an action location. Review these roles in Japanese Particles を, に, and で.

も in an Ordinary Negative Sentence

When a known person or thing is added to a negative statement, も can mean “not either.” The negative meaning comes from the predicate, not from も alone.

A: 私わたしは行いきません。
I am not going.

B: 私わたしも行いきません。
I am not going either.

田中たなかさんも来きません。
Mr. Tanaka is not coming either.

Question Word+も+Negative

A question word followed by も and a negative predicate forms expressions such as “nothing,” “no one,” and “nowhere.” In standard beginner Japanese, the predicate must be negative for these meanings.

PatternExampleNatural meaning
何なにも+negative何なにも食たべません。I do not eat anything. / I eat nothing.
誰だれも+negative誰だれも来きません。No one is coming.
どこにも+negativeどこにも行いきません。I am not going anywhere.

Notice that どこ keeps に: どこにも. The particle に still marks a destination, and も joins it to the negative pattern.

何も and 何でも Are Different

Do not use 何なにも食たべます to mean “I eat anything.” For an unrestricted positive meaning, use 何なんでも.

何なにも食たべません。
I do not eat anything.

何なんでも食たべます。
I eat anything.

誰だれも来きません。
No one is coming.

誰だれでも参加さんかできます。
Anyone can participate.

Compare the Two Negative Patterns

SentenceWhat も doesMeaning
私わたしも行いきません。Adds a known person to a negative statementI am not going either.
誰だれも行いきません。Question word+も+negativeNo one is going.
水みずも飲のみません。Adds a known item to a negative statementI do not drink water either.
何なにも飲のみません。Question word+も+negativeI do not drink anything.

Common Mistakes

Incorrect or unsuitable hereCorrectReason
私わたしはも学生がくせいです。私わたしも学生がくせいです。も replaces は.
雑誌ざっしをも読よみます。雑誌ざっしも読よみます。This form can be emphatic in formal language, but neutral beginner addition normally uses も instead of を.
図書館としょかんも勉強べんきょうします。図書館としょかんでも勉強べんきょうします。で is still needed to mark the place of study.
誰だれも来きます。誰だれも来きません。“No one” requires a negative predicate.

  2. Fill in the particle: 猫ねこがいます。犬いぬ( )います。
  3. Fill in the particle: 本ほんを読よみます。雑誌ざっし( )読よみます。
  4. Choose も or にも: 学校がっこうに行いきます。図書館としょかん( )行いきます。
  5. Choose も or でも: 家いえで勉強べんきょうします。図書館としょかん( )勉強べんきょうします。
  6. Translate into Japanese: “I do not eat anything.”
  7. Translate into Japanese: “No one came yesterday.”
  8. Translate into Japanese: “I am not going anywhere this weekend.”
  9. Correct the sentence: 私わたしはも学生がくせいです。
  10. Explain the difference: 私わたしも行いきません。 / 誰だれも行いきません。

Answers and Reasons

  1. 妹いもうとも学生がくせいです。 The added topic uses も instead of は.
  2. も: 犬いぬもいます。 The added subject uses も instead of が.
  3. も: 雑誌ざっしも読よみます。 The added object uses も instead of を.
  4. にも: 図書館としょかんにも行いきます。 に remains because the library is a destination.
  5. でも: 図書館としょかんでも勉強べんきょうします。 で remains because the library is where the action happens.
  6. 何なにも食たべません。 何も combines with a negative predicate to mean “nothing” or “not anything.”
  7. 昨日きのうは誰だれも来きませんでした。 誰も plus a past negative predicate means “no one came.”
  8. 今週末こんしゅうまつはどこにも行いきません。 に stays with どこ, and the predicate is negative.
  9. 私わたしも学生がくせいです。 Do not place も after は; replace は with も.
  10. 私わたしも行いきません adds a known person: “I am not going either.” 誰だれも行いきません uses question word+も+negative: “No one is going.”

Summary

Put も after the item that shares information already stated. In basic neutral sentences, it replaces は, が, and を. Keep に and で, producing にも and でも. With question words, use a negative predicate for 何なにも〜ません, 誰だれも〜ません, and どこにも〜ません.
