どこ means “where,” but the particle and sentence ending tell you what kind of “where” question you are asking. Use Xはどこですか to ask for the location of a known place or thing, Xはどこにありますか/いますか to ask where something or someone exists, and どこで before an action verb to ask where an activity happens.
Treat どこ as the missing place in the answer
A reliable way to build a question is to start with a possible answer, find the unknown place, and replace that place with どこ. Keep the particle that belongs to the place. If the answer says 図書館で勉強します, “I study at the library,” replace 図書館 with どこ but keep で: どこで勉強しますか. This method is safer than translating the English word “where” first. Checking whether the answer restores the same particle gives you a quick, practical grammar test.
| What you want to know | Question pattern | Possible answer |
|---|---|---|
| Basic location or identification | Xはどこですか | Xは二階です |
| Where an object exists | Xはどこにありますか | Xは机の上にあります |
| Where a person or animal is | Xはどこにいますか | Xは教室にいます |
| Where an action happens | どこでVますか | カフェで勉強します |
| Destination | どこへ/どこに行きますか | 京都へ行きます |
| Origin | どこから来ましたか | 大阪から来ました |
Pattern 1: X はどこですか
Use this compact pattern when a known place, room, counter, station, or event location is the topic. The answer commonly uses another noun or a location expression followed by です. It is especially useful in buildings, stores, stations, and schedules.
受付はどこですか。
うけつけ は どこ です か。
Uketsuke wa doko desu ka.
Where is the reception desk?
会場はどこですか。― 新宿です。
かいじょう は どこ です か。― しんじゅく です。
Kaijō wa doko desu ka. — Shinjuku desu.
Where is the venue? — It is in Shinjuku.
トイレはどこですか。― エレベーターの隣です。
トイレ は どこ です か。― エレベーター の となり です。
Toire wa doko desu ka. — Erebētā no tonari desu.
Where is the restroom? — It is next to the elevator.
The earlier sentence 駅は新宿です would be awkward if the intended meaning were “The station is in Shinjuku,” because it sounds as if the station itself is being identified as Shinjuku. 会場は新宿です, “The venue is in Shinjuku,” gives a natural question-answer pair.
Pattern 2: どこにありますか and どこにいますか
Use あります for inanimate things such as books, buildings, ATMs, and keys. Use います for people and animals. The particle に marks the place where the person or thing exists. When the item is already known, put it before は and ask where it is.
ATMはどこにありますか。
エーティーエム は どこ に あります か。
Ē-tī-emu wa doko ni arimasu ka.
Where is the ATM located?
山田さんはどこにいますか。
やまださん は どこ に います か。
Yamada-san wa doko ni imasu ka.
Where is Yamada?
鍵はどこにありますか。― 机の上にあります。
かぎ は どこ に あります か。― つくえ の うえ に あります。
Kagi wa doko ni arimasu ka. — Tsukue no ue ni arimasu.
Where are the keys? — They are on the desk.
In everyday speech, ATMはどこですか and ATMはどこにありますか can both be natural. The first is shorter and asks for the location in a broad way. The second explicitly frames the ATM as something that exists at a place. For a person, 山田さんはどこですか is possible in context, but どこにいますか clearly asks where the person is.
Pattern 3: どこで + action verb
Use で when the unknown place is where an action takes place. Studying, eating, buying, meeting, working, and taking a picture are actions. The verb after the place is the clue. Do not use に just because English says “at” or “in.”
どこで日本語を勉強しますか。― 家で勉強します。
どこ で にほんご を べんきょう します か。― いえ で べんきょう します。
Doko de Nihongo o benkyō shimasu ka. — Ie de benkyō shimasu.
Where do you study Japanese? — I study at home.
昼ご飯はどこで食べましたか。
ひるごはん は どこ で たべました か。
Hirugohan wa doko de tabemashita ka.
Where did you eat lunch?
どこで切符を買えますか。
どこ で きっぷ を かえます か。
Doko de kippu o kaemasu ka.
Where can I buy a ticket?
Compare 先生はどこにいますか, “Where is the teacher?” with 先生はどこで教えますか, “Where does the teacher teach?” The person exists at a place marked by に, but the teaching action happens at a place marked by で.
Destination and origin: どこへ, どこに, and どこから
Movement verbs create two more common patterns. With 行きます, 来ます, and 帰ります, へ or に can mark a destination. The particle から marks the starting point or origin. These are not interchangeable with で.
週末はどこへ行きますか。― 京都へ行きます。
しゅうまつ は どこ へ いきます か。― きょうと へ いきます。
Shūmatsu wa doko e ikimasu ka. — Kyōto e ikimasu.
Where are you going this weekend? — I am going to Kyoto.
どこから来ましたか。― シアトルから来ました。
どこ から きました か。― シアトル から きました。
Doko kara kimashita ka. — Shiatoru kara kimashita.
Where did you come from? — I came from Seattle.
Question word order and natural short answers
Japanese usually keeps the unknown element in the same position as the information in the answer. English moves “where” to the front, but Japanese does not have to. あなたは東京で働きます becomes あなたはどこで働きますか, not a word-for-word copy of English order.
A short answer can omit material already present in the question. To どこで働きますか, both 東京で働きます and the shorter 東京です may be heard, but the full answer with で clearly shows that Tokyo is the place of the action. Beginners benefit from producing the full pattern before shortening it.
Polite どちら and casual どこ
どちら can be a more polite alternative to どこ when asking about a place, especially in service or business settings. It also means “which direction” or “which one of two,” so context matters. お手洗いはどちらですか is a polite “Where is the restroom?” In an ordinary conversation, トイレはどこですか is neutral and clear.
A complete exchange when asking staff for directions
In a station or store, begin with すみません to get someone’s attention, ask one clear location question, and then confirm the answer if necessary. You do not need a long English-style introduction. The important part is choosing a noun the listener can identify and matching the question to the kind of location you need.
すみません、中央口はどこですか。― あの階段の右です。
すみません、ちゅうおうぐち は どこ です か。― あの かいだん の みぎ です。
Sumimasen, chūō-guchi wa doko desu ka. — Ano kaidan no migi desu.
Excuse me, where is the central exit? — It is to the right of those stairs.
この近くにコンビニはありますか。― はい、駅の前にあります。
この ちかく に コンビニ は あります か。― はい、えき の まえ に あります。
Kono chikaku ni konbini wa arimasu ka. — Hai, eki no mae ni arimasu.
Is there a convenience store nearby? — Yes, there is one in front of the station.
The second exchange uses a related existence question instead of どこ. It is useful when you do not know whether the place exists nearby. If the answer is yes, you can follow up with どこにありますか, “Where is it?” Listen for location nouns such as 右 “right,” 左 “left,” 前 “front,” 隣 “next to,” and floor numbers. A natural exchange is successful when you can understand and act on the answer, not merely produce the question.
When the answer is too fast, ask for the exact piece you missed. 何階ですか means “What floor is it on?” and もう一度お願いします means “One more time, please.” If the staff member points and says あちらです, follow the gesture rather than waiting for a full sentence. Japanese location exchanges often omit the facility after it has become the topic. For example, 二階です is a complete practical answer to レストランはどこですか. Recognizing this omission makes real directions much easier to follow.
Common mistakes
- どこに勉強しますか for “Where do you study?” 勉強する is an action, so use どこで勉強しますか.
- 先生はどこでいますか. いる expresses existence, so use どこにいますか.
- Using あります for a person: 山田さんはどこにありますか. Use います for people and animals.
- Dropping the needed particle: どこ行きますか is common casual speech, but beginners should first learn the complete polite form どこへ行きますか.
- Answering どこで食べますか with レストランに食べます. The restaurant is the action place, so answer レストランで食べます.
- Treating every English “where” question as どこですか. The verb and the role of the place determine the particle.

Answers and reasons
- 受付はどこですか。(うけつけ は どこ です か/Uketsuke wa doko desu ka.)A known facility is the topic, and the question asks for its basic location.
- に:ATMはどこにありますか。 に marks the place where an inanimate object or facility exists.
- に:山田さんはどこにいますか。 A person exists at a place marked by に, and います is used for a person.
- で:どこで日本語を勉強しますか。 Studying is an action, so its location takes で.
- そのかばんはどこで買いましたか。(その かばん は どこ で かいました か/Sono kaban wa doko de kaimashita ka.)Buying happens at a place marked by で.
- 明日はどこへ行きますか。(あした は どこ へ いきます か/Ashita wa doko e ikimasu ka.)へ marks the destination of 行きます.
- どこから来ましたか。(どこ から きました か/Doko kara kimashita ka.)から marks the origin.
- 先生はどこにいますか。(せんせい は どこ に います か/Sensei wa doko ni imasu ka.)いる expresses existence, so use に rather than で.
- どこで昼ご飯を食べますか。(どこ で ひるごはん を たべます か/Doko de hirugohan o tabemasu ka.)Eating is an action, so the place takes で.
- います:猫はどこにいますか。 Cats are animate, so use います.
- 会議はどこですか。(かいぎ は どこ です か/Kaigi wa doko desu ka.)Replace the answer location 三階 with どこ and keep the noun-sentence pattern.
- 図書館はどこにありますか asks for the library’s location; 図書館 is the thing that exists. どこで本を読みますか asks where the reading action happens. The first uses existence に; the second uses action-location で.
Summary
Use どこ as a replacement for the unknown place in the answer. Ask Xはどこですか for a basic location, Xはどこにありますか/いますか for where an object or person exists, and どこで + action verb for where an activity happens. Use どこへ or どこに for a destination and どこから for an origin. The correct particle comes from the place’s role in the Japanese sentence, not from the single English word “where.”
